Today I thought I would send you an item I had put aside to use during one of our Sunday services.\u00a0 Well, we don’t know when that will be, do we, so I thought I would share it with you in this email.\u00a0 Back in January I had started going through a couple of the boxes in our shed.\u00a0 Well-that lasted for a couple of days, then I stuffed most of it, unsorted, back!\u00a0 This article, though, I found during my early enthusiasm!\u00a0 It was from Life <\/i>magazine, back in January, 1996.\u00a0 The photo is of an elderly Afro-American lady, leaning on an ironing board.\u00a0 The photo probably caught my eye\u00a0\u00a0 because I am not best friends with ironing!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Giving Her All.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

‘Many would say that Oseola McCarty, a retired washerwoman, is the richest person in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.\u00a0 She had $150,000 and she gave it away- to fund scholarships for black students at the University of Southern Mississippi, where 30 years ago they wouldn’t have been admitted.\u00a0 “My only regret is that I didn’t have more to give,”says the tiny, 87-year-old McCarty.\u00a0 She left school after sixth grade to go to work.\u00a0 “Fifty cents for a bundle of clothes before the war,” McCarty says.\u00a0 “After the war, ten, twenty dollars a bundle and like that.” She never married, lived in the family home, always preferred black-and-white TV to colour, always preferred her fan to air-conditioning, and the money piled up.\u00a0 Now she gives others a chance she wishes she’d had: “I would have liked to have studied nursing.\u00a0 I like those stiff white aprons.”‘<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
