Leighmoor UC<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Jeremiah 31: 27-34 20 Oct 2019<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>There is a deep yearning within each one of us.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Not just the yearning to love and be loved,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>But I think it is connected to it.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>It is the yearning deep within us for our home and our family.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Some of us have begun to doubt whether we actually have a home,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>a family, a Father who loves us.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The People of Israel were stuck in a foreign land, in Babylon,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>servants of the people there.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Their home, Jerusalem had been destroyed, and their identity as the People of God smashed even as the Temple had been smashed.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>But through the prophet, they were reminded again and again,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Don\u2019t let go of that yearning<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>\u2013 you do have a home, you are part of my family, says God.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Even though they were there for generations, for 70 years,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>the yearning kept reminding them of who they were<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>and whose they were.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Even more, God says through the prophet,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>I am doing a new thing, making a new covenant.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>There won\u2019t just be stone tablets of the Law in the Temple,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>for you to obey;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>I will write this new covenant on your hearts<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>You will understand what is right and wrong<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>More than that, I will be in a close relationship with you,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>So wherever you are, I will be there with you.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The Temple might have been destroyed, but they learned God was with them in their gatherings to worship wherever they were;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>in their homes as they kept Shabat;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>in their hearts as they lived what was right .<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The widow in Jesus\u2019 parable yearned for justice.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>She had been wronged, and she knew it was wrong.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>She had no man to stand up for her publicly, so she did it herself.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Jesus said, if that unjust judge eventually heard her pleading<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>and her yearning, how much more will God listen to our yearning.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>It is a yearning for home, for a place where people are loved<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>and treated with fairness and more.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>We talked a few weeks ago about children and justice.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>How often have you heard a child saying It\u2019s not fair!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>It is often a very simple understanding, like whether someone else has more lollies than me,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>but the idea of fairness and justice is deep within us all.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>But what do you do when the world clearly is not fair, not just?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Hitting and screaming may not be the best solution, but we often see adults or even countries trying this.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Others just give up, but Jeremiah and Jesus are encouraging us never to give up,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>to keep yearning for justice,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>to always persist in prayer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>There is a reason why we should never give up yearning for justice. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is because God is yearning for a just world,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>a world where people treat each other with justice and compassion,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>a world where God\u2019s love rules.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Our God is a God who never gives up<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>\u2013 never gives up on his world; never gives up on us.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The reason we need to keep yearning for justice,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>to persist in prayer,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>is that it gives God a chance to change us,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>so that we can become part of the answer to our own prayers.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Never give up yearning for justice, that yearning comes from God. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Especially when the vulnerable are being picked on, we join God<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>in calling for them to be treated as valuable children of God.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Sometimes we wonder if God is even hearing our prayers<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Remembering praying for the end of Apartheid<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u2013 would it ever come?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>East Timor \u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Refugees<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Later this month I will have been ordained for 50 years.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Back in 1969 I was yearning for people<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>to find a living and vibrant faith in Australia.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Since then church attendances have dropped markedly<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Christian faith is not the assumed position of this nation,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>It is clearly secularism now.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Should I give up? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It hasn\u2019t really worked\u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>I can\u2019t get away from that yearning \u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>I could be at home in bed, or at a friend\u2019s Pink Ribbon breakfast;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>But I choose to come here;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>because I yearn for you to find a close and stronger<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>relationship with the living God.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>I yearn for this congregation to discover its mission and to thrive.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Don\u2019t give up on that yearning God gives you.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Never give up praying,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>for praying brings us into a deeper relationship with God,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>and through that we are changed,<span
