When we pause to consider how fragile our lives truly are, we begin to realize that simply being alive today is itself a miracle. And into this miracle of an ordinary day, Jesus speaks to us and calls us the salt of the earth and the light of the world, inviting us not only to treasure the life we have been given, but to live it in a way that brings flavour, hope, and light to the world around us.

(Slide 2) Even when the world’s noise is loud, and God’s wisdom feels quiet, our hearts often long for something deeper, truer, and more enduring. Into this longing, God’s power is revealed through humility, love, and the cross of Christ. Today, we are invited once again to rediscover who we are – and whose we are – as salt of the earth and light of the world.

In 1 Corinthians chapter 2, Paul reminds the church that they are called into fellowship with Jesus Christ and invited to share the mind of Christ. To have the mind of Christ is to embrace humility, self-giving love, and faithfulness, even when such a way appears weak by the standards of the world.

The divisions and struggles within the Corinthian church reveal how easily the church can lose its focus when it forgets Jesus and the Cross, the true centre of faith and identity. Faith rooted in human wisdom is fragile and unstable, but faith grounded in the power of God endures.

Paul deliberately rejects the worldly wisdom and rhetorical excellence so highly valued in his culture. He confesses that both his message and his ministry come in weakness. Yet it is precisely in that weakness that God’s power is made visible. Paul proclaims, “Jesus Christ, and him crucified.”

Today’s reading invites us into the power and wisdom that come from God alone. God’s wisdom was revealed, yet the rulers of this world failed to recognize it and thus crucified Christ. God’s wisdom remains hidden from systems of power that rely on control, status, and pride. This wisdom is not the product of human insight or intelligence, but a gift of grace.

(Slide 3) God has revealed this wisdom to us through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit makes the invisible visible, searching even the deep things of God. Without the Spirit, God’s purposes remain obscure; with the Spirit, they are illuminated. The Christian life begins and continues not in self-reliance, but in dependence upon the Spirit of God.

Paul calls believers back to unity – unity grounded not in human leaders or achievements, but in Christ crucified. This Christ shapes how we think, how we live, and how we relate to one another. Christian understanding is relational and spiritual in Christ.

(Slide 4) May we know the joy of seeking and discovering God’s wisdom, already revealed yet still hidden, like children joyfully treasure-hunting under the gentle guidance of the Holy Spirit. Let us receive the Spirit’s guidance in all that we say, do, and offer in service. May we deepen our fellowship with Jesus and share the love of Christ revealed on the cross.

(Slide 5) Through Matthew 5:13 – 20, Jesus gives us our calling toward our neighbours and the world to be salt and light. Jesus does not say, “Try to become salt and light.” He declares, “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.” Salt preserves and brings flavour; light reveals and guides.

We know that salt has two primary functions: it adds flavour and prevents decay. Salt works quietly. It is often unseen, dissolving itself so that its purpose may be fulfilled. In the same way, countless lives of sacrifice and service, often unnoticed, have made it possible for us to taste the goodness of God’s kingdom and experience its culture in this world. Through our saltiness, may we be agents of God’s cleansing grace in a world wounded by sin.

Here, Jesus calls us not the salt of a private religious circle, but the salt of the earth. Personal faith and spiritual maturity matter deeply, yet we are called to carry God’s grace outward -for the sake of the community and the world. Faith is never meant to be hidden, diluted, or privatized.

Just as salt from the sea is distributed and used in many places, so each of us is sent into different contexts. In Scripture, salt appears in diverse ways: seasoning food, accompanying offerings, symbolizing covenant, and even serving healing purposes. Likewise, we are called to embody God’s grace and love across every sphere of life. I give thanks as I witness the many forms of service and faithfulness among you – each a distinct expression of God’s work.

A single grain of salt cannot season a meal. Even the most brilliant grain is insufficient on its own. Salt must be gathered; it must work together. Only in unity can salt preserve and give flavour. However, it must not be too salty or too strong. Salt may seem ordinary and abundant, yet it is indispensable. May we become the kind of salt that is close at hand, easily found, and deeply effective, willing to dissolve ourselves where life feels tasteless, so that God’s goodness may be known.

(Slide 6) Jesus also calls us the light of the world. Our world is filled with dark and painful corners. Yet just as we have found comfort, direction, and hope through the light others have shone into our lives, we are now called to reflect Christ’s light, dispelling darkness, guiding those who walk in uncertainty, and shining together like countless stars lighting the night.

(Slide 7) Jesus urges us, “Let your light shine,” not for self-glory, but so that others may see God’s goodness and give glory to the Father. Such a life flows from deep alignment with Jesus and His way of love, justice, and mercy.

The righteousness Jesus speaks of goes far beyond rule-keeping and exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees. It is not by stricter legalism, but by deeper transformation of heart, motive, and desire. True righteousness flows from an inwardly renewed life and becomes visible in faithful action. True discipleship is embodied, public, and transformative.

(Slide 8) In 1 Corinthians 2, God’s wisdom is revealed quietly through the Spirit. In Matthew 5, that revealed wisdom becomes visible as salt and light in the world. Together, today’s readings call the church to live as a community shaped by the cross, thinking with the mind of Christ and embodying His light. United in Christ, we are sent to live faithfully and visibly, as salt and light, bearing witness to God’s transforming grace.

So may we go from this place shaped by the Cross, guided by the Spirit, and anchored in Christ. May our lives quietly season the world with grace, and may our light shine, not loudly, not for recognition, but faithfully. And as others glimpse God’s goodness through us, may all glory return to the One who called us, formed us, and sent us out – Jesus Christ, our crucified and risen Lord.

Thanks be to God!
